Should I have you take a few branches off or remove the whole tree?

This is a tough question to answer! Like the human body every tree is different. There may be general guidelines for each species of tree but the full picture has to be analyzed to make a final determination.
Let’s look at some of the questions we ask when evaluating the tree.

Condition of the tree – Is it dropping branches? Is there cavity rot? Is there sufficient foliage? Is it suffering from die back? Surrounding area – Has there been significant root damage? Is the area prone to flooding? Age of the tree – How old is the tree? Younger trees can recover from removing multiple branches better than an older tree. They can also be shaped into mature, sound trees. Activity level around the tree – Is your patio under the tree? Do children play under the tree? Do you park your car under the tree? Is the tree in an area that if it fell or dropped branches it would not damage anything? Safety/Drama – Does this tree pose a safety danger? Will you wake up in the middle of the night to a hole in your roof? Your morning commute will be over before it starts with the tree across your car?

Tree Trimming for Fire Prevention

Ordinarily, you may think of tree trimming as commonplace maintenance intended to ensure the health and safety of your trees and property, and you’d be right. Regular trimming yields many benefits that can prolong the life of a tree by enabling strong tree structure and growth while minimizing risk due to dead or weak branches.
But did you know that tree trimming can be closely associated with fire safety? It’s true, denying your trees regular trimming or care increases the potential for the spread of fire due to low lying branches and excess yard waste (leaves/bark/sticks).

Why delay when you could start today.

Know the Risks

A great start will begin with identifying problem areas like solar panel installation and tree health to determine which trees may be most susceptible to fire. You ca view the Perth solar installation facebook page here.
Signs of a distressed tree: excessive leaf loss or leafless branches, frail bark falling off tree, falling limbs that are dry or brittle, noticeable rot or fungus growth. A dying tree can be a fire hazard and if so should be removed immediately. An experienced arborist will help you to identify and address potential hazards.

Proper Tree Spacing

Tree Service Landscape Service Tree LandscapingVertical Spacing: Is the removal of “ladder fuels” – branches and vegetation that create a link between the ground and the treetops. It is recommended to remove all tree branches at least 6 feet off the ground for lone trees and if there are nearby shrubs or bushes to allow even more space by trimming branches to provide clearance that is 3 times the height of the shrub or bush.

Horizontal Spacing: If multiple trees are near one another, there should ideally be at least 10 feet of horizontal clearance between the branches of other trees or structures (house/garage/deck).

This distance is increased when dealing with trees on a slope as follows:Flat or Mild Slope: 10 feet, Mild or Moderate Slope: 20 feet and Moderate or Steep Slope: 30 feet

The general idea of tree spacing is to create adequate and clear space between trees/shrubs to slow or even prevent the spread of wildfire on your property.
Defensible Space: The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (Cal Fire) have in place recommended guidelines for safeguarding AC repair property against wildfire. The primary HVAC Toledo page goal is to create what is known as “Defensible Space” or a buffer zone surrounding your property that is clear of overgrown or thick vegetation that may accelerate the spread of wildfire.

Cal Fire advocates that this space extends 100 feet from your home and other structures on your property and is divided into two zones. Zone 1- 30 feet from structures: Regularly trim trees keeping branches 10 feet away from other trees/structures, remove all dead or dry vegetation and provide clear space between trees, bushes, and other flammable items (patio furniture, sheds, swing sets). Zone 2 – 30 to 100 feet from structures: create horizontal spacing between trees and bushes, create vertical spacing between trees and ground and cut grass to a maximum height of 4 inches. Plain and simple, a fire needs fuel to continue burning. Dead and dry vegetation will allow a fire to sustain itself and travel from one location to the next.

What is Tree Lopping?

Tree lopping is the process of trimming various sections of a tree. The lopping may involve clearing away branches or limbs, or even shortening trunks. There are two different schools of thought in regard to the practice of lopping, with some people feeling the process is beneficial and others believing the practice should be avoided if at all possible.

One form of tree lopping takes place as part of the landscaping process. In this setting, the tree lopper has the goal of reshaping existing trees so they will blend in with the general landscape design. This may involve trimming branches and limbs in order to modify the shape of the tree. If the idea is to limit the height of the tree, the lopping may involve removing all the branches and limbs, as well as part of the trunk. When new branches begin to form, they are trained to grow in the directions desired, often with the use of guide wires.

The term “tree lopper” is a common name used to describe someone who lops trees for a job. Many people on the Central Coast NSW still refer to Arborists and other tree service providers as tree loppers. Tree lopping or tree topping, is an antiquated method of tree pruning, where the top of a tree is cut off -“topped” or “lopped”. This is done for many reasons, mainly safety and aesthetics or to stimulate new growth, opening up views, allowing more light, and reduced chance of property damage. These are all valid reasons. However, the average person’s knowledge of proper tree care is very limited, topping or lopping of trees actually causes more damage and makes trees unhealthy and potentially more dangerous.

Lopping trees creates wounds that open the tree to decay causing organisms, which can make your tree start to rot from the inside out. Tree lopping removes all the leaves off a tree which means the tree bark is open to sunburn, creating wounds for fungi and pests to get into. The new shoots that form around a topping cut are emergency shoots, which stem from buds in the bark. They are only attached to the bark, so when they grow large, they are highly susceptible to peel off. Topping a tree requires little knowledge of tree care, in fact anyone with a saw can do it. Tree service operators who are ignorant of proper tree pruning practices really are amateurs, that have no regard for customers long term safety.

What is the alternative to tree lopping? Trees can be pruned in more creative and respectful ways than tree lopping. Proper reduction pruning can be done to reduce size, height or width of some species. Thinning of the canopy can also allow more light or open views without ruining a trees structural integrity. Next option – if you really don’t like your tree – then just remove it completely.
